Do you know the difference between cardio and strength training?

Cardio and strength training are two different types of exercise that focus on different aspects of fitness and have different effects on the body.

Cardio training:
Cardio, also known as cardiovascular exercise, is also known as aerobic exercise. It involves activities that increase your heart rate and breathing rate, thereby improving the efficiency of your cardiovascular system (heart and lungs). The primary goal of cardio is to improve your endurance and fitness.

Strength training:
Strength training, also known as resistance or weight training, is focused on building muscle strength and improving the power of your musculoskeletal system. It involves using resistance to challenge the muscles. The primary goal of strength training is to increase muscle mass, improve muscle definition and improve overall physical strength.

It's important to note that a well-balanced fitness routine often includes a combination of both cardio and strength training to achieve a balanced level of fitness and overall health. The choice of which type of training to emphasize depends on your fitness goals and preferences.

When we look at horse training, how much of our training is more cardio-focused and how much is actually strength training?

Does a feeling of 'not good enough' hold you back?

I think this is a common thing we all experince. I know it is something I can struggle with horse training on a regular basis. I have not been training or riding horses my entire life... in fact, I have only been working with horses the last 5 years. A lot of people around me on a regular basis have much more years of experince than I do. Imposter syndom and 'not good enough' is probably something that I deal with each day.
BUT....
What is 'good enough'?
Well I decided to ask google and got this:
"Good enough" refers to a level of quality or performance that meets a certain acceptable standard or criteria without necessarily being perfect or exceptional. It implies that while something might not be flawless or ideal, it still satisfies the basic requirements or expectations for a particular situation or context. The concept of "good enough" acknowledges that striving for perfection might not always be practical or necessary, and sometimes achieving a satisfactory outcome within reasonable limits is sufficient to move forward or achieve a desired goal.
We are ALL 'good enough' as long as we show up for ourselves, for our horses and others. We are NOT perfect, and we do not need to be perfect. It is okay to make mistakes, and it is okay to celebrate the small wins, even if they are not quite what we were after. In fact, we should all be better at this. Celebrating our wins, our current level of knowledge, and our progress, instead of focusing on our what isn't working out. Lets focus on what has worked out, learn and move on.
Lets not let 'good enough' hold us back, but remember that we are ALWAYS 'good enough'.

🤔 Consider this...

If you keep your horse in a stable at night, and on flat grass paddock during the day, and do a larger percentage of your training on a riding arena. How much proprioception training does your horse recieve?

Proprioception is the animal's ability to know where its body, and more specifically its limbs and joints, are in space without looking at them.

For example, when we sit at a table and there is a bar under the table to rest our feet on, we don't need to see the bar to know where to place our feet. We can do this because we are exposed to a wide range of different movements on a daily basis.
This spatial awareness, which has nothing to do with our eyes, also helps us prevent injuries. Imagine... what if we kept missing the bar and banging our shins on it constantly and our body never learned this spatial awareness. We would be covered in bruises.

All animals need proprioception, but the environment and the activities the animal lives/does on a regular basis affect the amount of proprioceptive abilities it has. Therefore, we need to expose our horses to a variety of movements and environments. This allows them to increase their proprioception and reduces the risk of injury.

I use the words dynamic movement often.
I believe the use of dynamic movement is a key element that we should inccoporate into our physically training of horses. But what does it mean?
'Dynamic movement refers to a type of physical motion or activity characterized by constant change, energy, and fluidity. It involves movement that is not static or fixed but instead involves varying speeds, directions, and forces. Dynamic movement often requires the engagement of multiple muscles and joints working together to create a coordinated and integrated motion.'
If we look at our training of horses, lunging, riding on the arena... etc. I would say those activities are low on the dynamic movement scale, unles you are doing high level dressage, jumping or westren sports.
But if we look at the natural environment of the horse, there is nothing but dynamic movement built into their every day movement. They live in groups where there is the option for play. They live mountain terriane and flat terriane. They forage from both grasses on the ground, to shrubs and trees up high. Horse are built for dynamic movment, and that dynamic movement is essential to keeping their bodies strong and healthy.
So when we remove them from an environment, where dynamic movement is just a part of their normal every day, and we wish for our horses to stay healthy, we need to make dynamic movement apart of of training or our horses everyday.
